Natham Parotta Kadai, Natham

Kaavanna Parotta Kadai / Koorai Kadai / Natham Parotta Kadai – These are the names that this place is commonly known as. This place has so many names because the place as such doesn’t carry a name board. It used to have thatched roof and thus the Natham Koorai Kadai reference.

When I knew I was going to be in and around Madurai for a couple of days I checked this place in Maps and it showed approximately around 38 km (around 1 hr 17 min) from where I was, and I immediately decided to include this 60+ old place in my itinerary.

The place is open only between 7 AM to 11 AM, on all days. I called a day before and the person who picked the phone suggested I come by 8 AM, because everything will be ready by then. It’s a humble place wherein now a proper roof has replaced the original Koorai (Thatched Roof). Only indicator to the shop will be 2 Banana Leafs on either side of the entrance to the shop. Once all the items are sold out and the shops gets closed for operations, the Banana Leaf is removed. Thinnai type Floor Seating with Mats (Paai) adorns the seating area. Regulars kept coming to enjoy the food as well as many were doing take-aways.

Poricha Parotta/Ennai Parotta (₹15/pc) with their Sherva which is their specialty was good. The generous owner gave us tasting portions of their Kuska and complimentary Dalcha, which is priced at ₹30 for a plate. It was simple but full of flavours. Their Kuska is what we would otherwise refer to as Nei Choru. The way they were being stacked to be served/parcelled was a vision to behold. Very different and mesmerizing. Special mention to their Piquant Mint Chutney. Awesome!

I’ve been holding my breath so far to introduce my most favorite item from this Natham Parotta Shop. And, it is there Mutton Chukka (₹60) which was mind-blowing in taste. The generous use of Fresh Pepper creating the right amount of spiciness with succulent and perfectly sized Mutton pieces that has soaked-in necessary base gravy makes this probably one of the best Mutton Chukkas, I’ve ever had. I can guarantee you I’ll visit them again just for the early morning Kuska experience and their out-of-this-world Mutton Chukka.

Service was courteous and the gentleman who seems to be the owner made sure we ate to our fill. He, in fact arranged tea for us from a nearby shop after knowing that we’ve come from far to visit his shop.

Totally paid around ₹210.
